Blogging is great for the introverts out there. I know this because I am one of them. Blogging really has changed my life and it could change your life, too.

As you know, we’re nearly at one and a half years of Modern Day Girl Blog being live – wow. Who would have thought that I’d still be writing here once or twice a week consistently for that long? I certainly didn’t think I’d still be around.

But since starting the Fabulous Introverts Series recently, I’ve forgotten how much I love running a series, but also how much I love focussing on the introverts of the world. I’m a proud introvert and I can’t imagine living life any other way.

I’ll never be that person standing in front of crowds easily and giving speeches. I’ll never be the first one to volunteer to attend conferences (as the thought of that many people in one room scares me silly!) or any social events like that.

Instead, I’ve learned to understand myself better, run with my qualities (and negatives), and to know that introverts don’t need to change for anyone or anything.

Blogging really has helped me figure this out and I don’t think I’d be sitting here with these thoughts today without it. I am a firm believer that you should never try and change who you are (unless you want to – which is absolutely okay too), and play on your strengths.

So today we start a new series for those introverts among us who want to get into blogging. Alas I don’t know it all, but I can surely share my experience in the blogosphere so far.

It’s not direct face-to-face social interaction

If you’re an extrovert, social interactions will come naturally to you. You won’t doubt yourself, or avoid social situations. In fact you probably embrace them and have great abilities to win people over.

Introverts aren’t unfortunately gifted with this skill (or really, it doesn’t come naturally anyway – in my case).

Instead, introverts are quietly confident and when time is spent getting to know them, they are great people to be around. Sometimes though, introverts just want to spend time alone, aware from social media and away from people.

Blogging is great for this. Once you get up and running (I’ll be covering this in week 2), writing can be great in getting your feelings out, helping other people with their own problems, and just generally enjoying yourself away from people (and on your own). Plus, you don’t even need to leave the house.

Now I don’t recommend blogging if you are looking for a way of not leaving your house. Leaving your house has to be done and it’s not healthy staying indoors all of the time. But, if this isn’t a problem then I would definitely recommend it for being social without the face to face stuff.

It’s a fab hobby

It’s really important to have hobbies. You need down time and enjoying the little things in life is really important. Blogging is a great way start up writing as a hobby. If you enjoy putting pen to paper, or words to WordPress more specifically, blogging could work out great for you.

It may even work out that the time you spend writing might be the only personal time you get. You never know, you might end finding writing quite therapeutic, especially if you have anxiety. I’ve written more about the benefits of writing on anxiety here.

Personally for me, I really enjoy thinking about what I’m going to write, the research that goes into it, as well as producing the graphics for the post. Honestly, it’s a great hobby.

You get to meet lots of wonderful people and be part of a supportive community

Until actually starting a blog, you probably won’t realise how much of a community there is out there for bloggers. Honestly, it’s so surprising! Although bloggers are technically rivals, everyone is always on hand to help and give advice where needed.

As an introvert, it can sometimes be hard to feel included in a community when you’d much rather be with just a few people at a time. With blogging you get the chance to be part of a community, but on your own terms.

On this note though, the only point worth noting on this is to make sure you spend time with family and friends too. It’s very easy to isolate oneself when blogging so make sure to make time for those around you.

You can express yourself better in writing than speaking

I’m not sure about you but I find putting words on paper much easier than speaking them. As you know, I’m not the most confident person you’ll ever meet. This includes trying to get my point across verbally (although I’ve been told I have a good telephone manner!).

Writing out thoughts and feelings has been proven to be beneficial for mental health. It can be frustrating when you feel no-one is listening to you, or don’t have an outlet to express your thoughts. Blogging would be ideal to get everything out.

Plus, your blog doesn’t have to be public. There are ways to keep it private (by setting password access, etc), and your blog doesn’t have to be created for the sole purpose of helping other people. You’ve got to look after number one sometimes, too!

But, but you may end up helping others in the process. Blogging can really open up your eyes to the world that much more, and allows you to connect with others similar to you.

It might lead on to more opportunities in future (that you may not necessarily get in general life either)

General research into the topic of starting a blog probably brings up millions of results on Google now. Blogging has definitely had a revolution!

Some of the possible opportunities that some websites promise just aren’t true, but some are. I’m not one for pulling the wool over anyone’s eyes when I say that opportunities can come your way. They may not. Or you may need to really put yourself out there to get those opportunities. Or, it can sometimes take years of hard work before your efforts pay off.

Is anxiety making your life harder? Do you feel like it's getting worse? Here are some tips on dealing with anxiety easily and simply.

That being said though, there are numerous possibilities out there if you do decide to start a blog. Here are some:

  • Sponsored posts
  • Earning money from ads (although the amount depends on traffic – if that’s what you’re interested in that is)
  • Freelance writing
  • Bringing out your own course
  • Writing an ebook/ebooks

There’s more but can’t think of any right now! But as you can see, you can actually create a lot of opportunities yourself, and it’s worth it.

Now that I’ve covered the positives that blogging can have on introverts, let’s look at the negatives.

After all, it wouldn’t be far to just cover the best bits without realistically looking at the other side of it. Burn it is a real thing for bloggers and it can really make you unwell.

Too much social media can be really bad for you

Once you’ve got your blog up and running (which we’ll be talking about next week), you need to promote it to get people’s eyes on it. To do that you’re going to be using social media a lot (and I’m not just talking Facebook here).

There are studies out there that show that using social media actually makes you unhappy, and it is important to remember this.

It's been a rough few weeks! I have some bits to get off of my chest on the work, anxiety and blog front.You may have read in the news recently that parents are being told to limit screen time for kids. Well, in my eyes, the same should go for adults on social media. You see images and read stories where people only show their best bits. You don’t see the daily norms of general life, because quite frankly it’s boring.

But comparison becomes easy and you start wishing you had other people’s lives. It makes you feel depressed, and wishing for more but not knowing how to go about it. Material possessions become more important than experiences. Honestly, social media can really be the devil sometimes.

So for an introvert, it’s important to keep your wits about you. If you do decide to start a blog, remember the reasons why you started it in the first place. Remember this when you spend time on social media and use it strategically (NOT for procrastination).

Otherwise, you run the risk of making you feel depressed and deflated, making you want to close off even more.

Putting pressure on yourself/perfectionism

Perfectionism is something to be really wary of. Until I started this blog, I didn’t think I was a perfectionist at all. After all, I suppose I’d never really truly passionate about something before. I never realised how much I wanted to help women with their anxiety.

So once I found this outlet, I wanted everything to be perfect. I would spend hours getting my blog posts right and put huge amounts of pressure to get it looking how I wanted it.

I suffered burn out after about six months – I was exhausted, stressed, angry at myself, felt bad for the readers and letting them down, and the list goes on.

As an introvert who may also put themselves under immense pressure to get things right, be REALLY careful of this. If you like order and structure, blogging may through you right off. Why? It’s because not everything goes to plan.

Getting a routine sorted is great for people with anxiety. Learn how and why to create a routine that can help you and your anxiety.

The background script keeping your blog up may cause an error and the whole thing goes down. You might update a plugin for this not to work on your current blogging platform and the whole thing goes down. LOTS can go wrong and it’s not always under your control/your expertise.

So be very careful with how much energy you put into the blog if you decide to start one. Remember that nothing will ever be perfect, and take a step back regularly to bring you back into the present.

Being in the public eye to a certain extent

Although you might not realise this, blogging does put you out there a bit. You can choose not to make the blog public, or keep it from friends and family, but there’s always that risk that someone will discover it.

Once your blog starts to kick off, more and more people will be coming back to read your blog.

Your opinion may rub people up the wrong way or someone may leave a nasty comment. Your post may go viral and suddenly thousands of people are viewing you and your blog. It can actually be quite scary.

So, as an introvert, this thought may scare you (as it did me for a bit) and is definitely worth considering before you take the plunge.

Can you cope with the attention you may get? Would you be able to handle the extra pressure knowing that lots of people could end up reading your posts daily?

Your blog topic may be too close to home

I touched on this above but it is something worth considering. Depending on what you decide to blog about, your topic could be controversial. You’ve got to remember that at some point, your blog may be discovered by friends or family.

Or, if you keep yourself anonymous, someone someday is going to find out it was you. Although this might not happen, it still might.

Or, maybe you decide to start a mum blog where you post pictures of yourself with your children. Again depending on how private you keep it, you’re putting pictures of your children on the internet.

You don’t know how long this content is going to be floating around in the internet ether and should definitely be considered.

As an introvert, I am responsible for all of the content I put out. For this reason I am cautious in my opinion whilst being true to myself. This is something definitely worth bearing in mind.

But, I wanted to cover all bases so you know what you’re getting yourself into. It’s very easy to get swept away with the excitement of starting a new blog, but also easy to forget how much work goes into it.

  1. I have to agree with everything you said. I started blogging for cathartic reasons and it has helped considerably!

    I do occasionally have to put a restriction on social media. When it starts getting me down or I am doing it just for promoting my blog I have to unplug for a while!

      And yeah I definitely have to have breaks from social media – it can be so depressing can’t it? Haha

  2. I am kind of an introvert too, I can be very sociable and than the minute after needing my solo me time. I also hate talking on the phone and prefer texting. I get why blogging helped you then. Great article!

  3. Great article! You nailed it on all points, both good and bad. I’m a major introvert and was also looking for a new focus now that my kids are out of the need stage. I’ve stuck with blogging for 6 months now, and that’s the longest I’ve ever kept something up. I’m pretty damn proud of that. Again, great post!
